Many people only visit an eye clinic when their vision blurs or their eyes feel tired. Yet a comprehensive eye exam does much more than update your glasses prescription, it is one of the most effective ways to detect eye disease early, often before you notice any symptoms. At Health & Style Medical Centre, our ophthalmology team uses a structured exam to protect both your sight and your overall health.
What a comprehensive eye exam involves
A full eye exam is a series of painless tests that assess how well you see and how healthy the structures of your eye are. Each step gives your ophthalmologist a different piece of the picture.
- Visual acuity testing to measure how clearly you see at different distances.
- Refraction to determine your exact prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
- Eye pressure measurement to screen for glaucoma.
- A slit-lamp examination of the front of the eye, including the cornea and lens.
- A dilated retinal exam to inspect the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye.

Why early detection matters
Conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration can quietly damage your vision long before you feel anything. Because the eye also reveals signs of diabetes and high blood pressure, a routine exam can flag problems that affect your whole body, not just your eyes.
How often should you book one?
Adults with no symptoms generally benefit from an exam every one to two years, while people with diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of eye disease, or those over 40 may need more frequent checks. Children should have their vision assessed before school and at regular intervals as they grow.
