HSMC dental care infographic about a child’s first dental visit, showing a pediatric dentist examining a young child and highlighting tips for preparation, timing, and healthy dental habits.

Bring your child for their first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. It sounds early, but the first visit is about prevention and familiarity, not treatment.

Why so early?

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, and it can begin as soon as teeth appear — especially with night-time bottles and sweetened drinks. An early first visit lets us catch feeding and cleaning habits before they cause damage, apply fluoride where needed, and answer the questions every parent has about teething, thumbs and pacifiers. Just as importantly, a child who visits the dentist before anything hurts learns that the clinic is a friendly place — which pays off for the rest of their life.

What happens at the first visit

The first appointment is short and gentle. For toddlers we often examine in a ‘knee-to-knee’ position with the child on your lap, count the teeth out loud, brush with a soft brush, and let them touch the mirror and ‘Mr. Thirsty’ the suction straw. We check tooth development, gums, and bite, look for early decay, and finish with practical guidance on brushing, fluoride toothpaste amounts, bottle habits and snacks. No surprises, and nothing is done without the child being shown it first — tell, show, do.

How to prepare your child

  • Talk about it positively and briefly — ‘the dentist counts your teeth’ beats a long build-up
  • Avoid loaded words: no ‘pain’, ‘needle’, ‘drill’ — or ‘don’t worry’, which teaches them there’s something to worry about
  • Read a picture book about the dentist or role-play counting teeth with a toy
  • Schedule for their best time of day — usually mornings, never nap time
  • Stay relaxed yourself: children read parents’ anxiety with perfect accuracy

If your child is anxious or has had a bad experience

Tell us before the visit. We can plan a slower introduction — sometimes the first appointment is nothing more than a ride in the chair and a sticker, and that is a success. Trust built early is the foundation for every future visit.

Building the habit

After the first visit, most children are seen every six months. Regular, uneventful visits are exactly what keeps them uneventful — small problems found early rarely need the treatments children fear.
